Holy Eve and Epiphany

January 18 is the second Holy Eve. It is the same as the first one, except girls sing the specific carols in the evening. By the way, one of the best-known Christmas songs, “Carol of the Bells”, is a Ukrainian shchedrivka (a carol sung traditionally on this evening), “Shchedryk”, translated into English.

January 19 – Epiphany
People get together by a waterbody with a cross cut out from the ice. A priest sanctifies the water, which people use later to sprinkle their cattle and homes.

That is how Ukrainians celebrate Christmas! Of course, each region has its specific customs, but generally everything is the same throughout Ukraine!
